PureDarwin OS (PDOS) is a free and open-source operating system that is currently under development. The system is based on the Mach microkernel and the BSD userland, using Darwin as the base of its kernel. The goal of PDOS is to provide a secure and fully functional Unix alternative for modern computer systems. To achieve this goal, the project will be relying on modern hardware support and the latest versions of the GNU userland tools. The distribution is being developed entirely by volunteers, all work done in PDOS is based on non-proprietary software that can be freely distributed.

PureDarwin OS started as a project at HexFive Security, a security company that develops and deploys custom security solutions for commercial clients. The goal was to create an operating system that can be used in any environment, small embedded devices stripe patrick collison uschinasmithnoahpinion, mobile phones and desktop computers alike. PureDarwin OS is based on Darwin, the core of Apple’s Mac OS X. Recently it has been announced by HexFive Security, that PureDarwin OS is now open source under the GNU GPLv3 license.

What are the goals of PureDarwin OS?

The primary goals are to create a stable, secure and fully functional 64 bit Unix-like operating system. Secondary goals include the use of portable open source software, compatibility with existing third-party software, support for modern devices and file systems look black lives matterroose new yorktimes, multi-processor support and industry compliance.

Will PureDarwin OS run on my computer?

That depends. We do our best to provide support for modern PC’s and laptops, but we cannot guarantee that PDOS will run on all systems due to limitations in the operating system kernel and hardware compatibility. If you are unsure about your computer system, please feel free to contact us .

What are some features of PureDarwin OS?

The primary goals of this work is to provide a stable and secure platform for modern computing. The current version already provides the following:

*Kernel*

~ An open source 64 bit kernel that is compatible with macOS X, a modern UNIX operating system. Linux compatibility is currently being worked on.

*Userland*

~ An open source userland based on FreeBSD’s, including various GNU utilities and the latest version of the free X Window System implementation, XSERVER.

*Device support*

~ All disk storage devices supported by Darwin are also supported in PureDarwin OS. This includes HFS+, UFS and Ext* volumes. Ext2 and Ext3 support is also available.

*File system support*

PDOS currently supports the following file systems: HFS+, UFS, FAT32, EXT*, BTRFS*. Support for more file systems is planned.

*Networking*

~ PDOS comes with several drivers for wired, wireless and mobile devices. Networking support includes IPv4/6, TCP/UDP/SMTP/HTTP protocols.

*Security*

~ FreeBSD’s security model is used throughout the system. Several popular (and some not so popular) security features are included to ensure maximum protection against unauthorized access to your computer.

What can you do with PureDarwin OS?

Anything one can do with a modern Unix-like operating system. PDOS is based on Darwin mynt filipino globe telecom 175m techasia, so both open source and commercial programs will run on the system. One of the main goals is to provide native support for many popular open source software packages which are not currently available for 64 bit processors.

What type of os is darwin, the core of os x?

Darwin is an open source Unix-like operating system developed by Apple Inc. It was developed as the research and development project that forms the core of Mac OS X, built on technologies acquired from NeXT Computer in 1996. (Wikipedia features)
