For many fans of the game, this was a sign that the classic gameplay was going to come into play again. And so it happened: the Overwatch Classic game has been recently announced.
Blizzard has confirmed that the new mode will help recreate the original Overwatch experience. What does it mean in practice? The fact is that teams will no longer have to wait for 6-on-6 challenges. However, this is, of course, much more than just a change in team size. This is a real back-to-roots story, which so many game fans have been waiting for!
The classic mode in the game is returning for a 4-week period, which is very similar to the popular Fortnite OG event. Modern players will now be able to enjoy the original format and, especially, more accurate gameplay balance. As in the original patch, the game will now be available with 21 heroes and 12 maps to choose from. What’s more, there won’t be any limits for hero selection. Now, you can craft a team with characters of the same type.
OWCS World Finals at DreamHack – Unexpected Ending
The event that all Overwatch fans had been waiting for has finally come to an end, and its result was quite unpredictable. Let us recall that the OWCS World Finals was the culmination of the first year of the Overwatch Champion Series. During the year, fans of the game saw the best new teams fiercely compete in an open format. First, it was at the regional level, and then, they moved on to DreamHack Majors.
The numerous changes that occurred in the game during the year added additional anticipation. This year, the tournament had a new open format. This means the best players were able to rise to the top, regardless of the name of their team.
This year, the tournament was held in Stockholm over 3 days and had an international format. Only 8 teams from EMEA, Asia, and North America made it to the finals. Among them were promising teams such as Toronto Defiant and Spacestation. However, Team Falcons became triumphant, showing maximum cooperation to get around Twisted Minds, NTMR, and Crazy Raccoon. The final fight with Crazy Raccoon, with a dizzying score of 4:1, was decisive. It helped Team Falcons get their first OWCS trophy.
What to Expect from OWCS 2025
The main Overwatch event next year will have 3 stages around the world and 3 international live events. It will all start with an open qualifier tournament in January. This will be followed by regular season games with the top 8-12 teams. Unfortunately, the number of teams involved has not been revealed yet. The next stage will be a regional tournament, which will qualify selected teams for international live events.
On the positive side, in 2025, the entire organization and tracking process will be more streamlined. In addition, the program will be better coordinated in regions such as NA, Europe, and the Asian region. Finally, most teams will automatically qualify for the next stage, with 2 slots for each region. Each of the slots will be filled by promotion and relegation.
What does this mean in practice? Now, teams with the lowest scores will have to compete with the promising talents of the Overwatch scene to defend their spots. In North America and EMEA, the FACEIT League will be the main qualifier for OWCS. As for Asia, the Open Qualifier will be hosted on WARA.GG. These innovations will undoubtedly create some great storylines for both players and fans of the game. Now, any promising team has a chance to succeed!
